Conference Logistics

Most of you will arrive to Medellin through the International airport “José María Córdoba”, which is actually in the city of Rionegro, next to Medellín. At the airport you can change money for your expenses in Medellín: Colombian pesos (although the money exchange business is not open late at night).

From the airport to the Conference venue “Hotel Plaza Rosa” you can easily get transportation. Use the official airport taxi service from the airport, which are taxis that are white with a blue line. A ride from the airport to the Hotel will take about one hour, and it will cost between Col$60.000 and COL$75.000 pesos.

On Sunday, August the 16th, we will have a Conference registration desk near the main auditorium of the Hotel Plaza Rosa (you can ask the Hotel personnel to find it) open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please get your Conference materials before 3:00 pm that day and join us for the inauguration banquet that day at the Botanical Garden (we will take you there by bus, see below)!!

  • FIELD TRIP (Wednesday August 19th)

On Wednesday 19th we will visit “Arví Park” where we will see some of the plant diversity of the cloud forest in the Andes, and visit some interesting conservation initiatives in local farmer communities near Medellin. That day we will leave from the Hotel at 9 am and travel for about 1 hour to Arví. We will walk through forest trails during the morning and then have lunch in a local Hotel there (provided by us). In the afternoon we will visit a community-based program for propagating ornamental plants. We will travel back to the Hotel Plaza Rosa in the afternoon and will arrive at about 6 pm.

The sites we will visit during the field trip will have cold and very humid weather. We recommend warm clothing, walking boots and raincoat. We also recommend to carry enough water and some snacks for the day.

On our way back to the Hotel Plaza Rosa you can take one of our buses, or if you feel adventurous you could take the “Metrocable”. The Metrocable is a gondola lift system for public transportation, and it will allow you interesting views of the forest canopy and the Aburrá valley where Medellín is located. If you want to use the Metrocable (you will have to pay for it, and it is not recommended if you are afraid of heights or have reduced mobility), please inform the Conference organizers on the morning of the field trip.

The Conference will have Plenary sessions every day and regular sessions for presentations of research projects on Cycad biology in oral and poster formats. We will have one poster session on Monday, and a couple of mixers to gather around and discuss about Cycads. On Friday we will have a general assembly to discuss future Cycad meetings and other topics of general interest. For details on the presentations and abstracts please see the Academic program booklet.

For information about the Conference program, please download the “Conference schedule and abstracts” .pdf in this website.

  • Information about food and drinks

All of the Conference participants will be provided with lunch at the Hotel Plaza Rosa every day (17, 18, 20, 21 August) from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. We will also have coffee stations during the morning and the afternoon breaks available for Conference participants.

Dinner is not covered by the Conference registration. The Plaza Rosa Hotel has a nice restaurant that you could try, and there are plenty of options for good food near the Hotel. The Plaza Rosa Hotel is located towards the top of the “10th Street” near the “Parque Lleras” at “El Poblado” neighborhood. If you walk down the 10th St. and explore the streets around and the Lleras Park you will find many different types of restaurants and bars. For Colombian food we recommend “Mondongos” and “El Aguacate” for Medellín/Antioquia typical food and “Nuquí” for sea food from the Pacific coast.
